Amahl and the Night Visitors




Subtitle: Can you spot the orange Canadian?


This Christmas season was made interesting in part by my participation in First Pres's production of Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. I told a couple of people I was playing Shepherdess #12 - that was a lie. I didn't even get a number. But I was a proud chorus member and part of a "family" with a husband and daughter (who were actually father and daughter; I was the only fake in the group).


Amahl is the story of a young shepherd boy in vaguely Biblical circumstances. He lives with his widowed mother in a poor shack; they are in desperate straights and may soon starve. He is crippled and uses a crutch. Then one night the three kings drop in on their way to Bethlehem, following the star.




There is no food in the house so Amahl's mother (Menotti didn't grace her with a name) sends him to find the shepherds in the fields and have them bring food for the kings. That's where me and my fake family come in. All the shepherds arrive with a feast for the kings, and sing and dance for them.


After they've gone and night has fallen, the desperate mother tries to steal a bit of the kings' gold (i.e. the counterpart to the frankincense and myrrh) to feed her starving child. The kings' paige raises the alarm and there is a scuffle, and then King Melchior sings really a lovely song about how she can keep the gold because the child they seek will build his kingdom not on gold but on... um... the raising of the poor, I think, or on love or something equally altruistic (I'm always backstage at that point). So the mother says 'I've waited for that kind of king all my life' and gives back the gold, and Amahl wants to get in on the giving too but all he has is his crutch, his only possession.


And I won't spoil it by telling you what happens next!


It was a beautiful production, with the high production values typical of First Pres. Ken did a beautiful job leading the music and there was a real orchestra. There was a troupe of young people who did a choreographed dance (many of them in my youth choir - I'm so proud) and lots of people said we were the best Amahl chorus they'd ever heard. It's that Shepherdess #12, I'm telling you.


I think Amahl as a play has become dated and I'm not sure I would want to put it on. A famous line comes when Amahl tells his mother there are three kings at the door - "and one of them is black." The supposedly Middle-Eastern shepherds enter singing solid British names out to each other; "Caroline, Caroline, Matthew, Veronica, give me your hand come along with me." Aside from that, I just don't think the "poor wretched crippled boy" thing plays anymore.


I remember being really, really moved by the show when I first saw it. I was about 11, and my friends Theresa (longtime Ontario Youth Choir friend of my mom's) and her son Adrian, who is my age, played the two main roles. So, they were actually mother and son, and they are both wickedly good - it was just really great. (Funnily enough I don't even remember the shepherds from that production... except maybe that twelfth one...) So I think any other production would automatically pale in comparison. But all the main singers were excellent; I really enjoyed the kings especially. The set was beautiful and our costumes were well done. I do want to note, however, that I was NOT in charge of the makeup. They got a little intense on us and most of us came out looking like citrus fruit. We even had to makeup our ankles with this very serious foundation that would not quit - four days later I swear some of it is still on my feet. The person in charge of the makeup works for Mary Kay (enough said; and by the way did you know that Mary Kay started in Dallas?)


David got in on the fun too; he did one of the follow spots. It was a little crazy to be doing this a couple of days before Christmas (our performances were December 20, 21 and 22) but hey - we hardly know anybody in Dallas so we didn't have much else to do! It was a fun and beautiful thing to be a part of. Someone at church even told me that she loved watching me and I'm a really good actress! Way to go, Shepherdess #12.

"Are there any more you can sing to 'Yellow Rose of Texas'?"


The great thing about your Master's degree is the more personal relationship you get to form with your professors. They aren't just lecturers; they're mentors and colleagues. You can have a conversation with them, get to know them... party with them!



(Okay lame setup; sorry. End-of-term punchiness.)


Here are a few pictures from our end-of-term shindig at Dr. Anderson's house. All the MSMs and spouses came out to have some mulled wine, apple cider and... Sonny Bryan's authentic Texan BBQ. It was a fun night, and I was a hit with my appetizer à la Aunt Jane in Sudbury. Although, it was a near disaster - mom had written to me earlier in the day with the recipe but had said to put one large or two small cloves in the cream cheese. She sent two frantic emails and even made a long-distance call to make sure I knew it was cloves of garlic, not cloves. That would have been a really weird appetizer... luckily, I did know the recipe well enough that I had assumed she meant garlic. (If you are finding this report trivial... I think you're on the wrong blog.)

A little tired from the end of term!

So, we had a great time relaxing together, profs and all, and capped it off with some caroling in the neighbourhood. We were lead by Dr. Anderson's cutie daughter, who was dressed appropriately for the occasion. She had apparently gone around earlier in the day to leave notes at people's houses telling (warning) them we were coming.






In true Dr. Hawn fashion, it was a very special brand of carolling; we sang all of our songs to the tune of "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Joy to the World; It Came Upon a Midnight Clear; even Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer - all to a tune which everybody (excluding two confused Canadians) knew beforehand and which I now will never forget. We of course had a little rehearsal beforehand. Dr. Hawn corrected a wrong note in the melody; Chelsea asked if we could count sing; Tyler requested to go through the tune to the syllable "do"... Ulston asked how you spell "do". I know; we're a hilarious bunch. Consider also that all of these carols were accompanied by Dr. Hawn's accordion. This being Texas, I was pretty much convinced we were going to be chased off at least one property with a shotgun.



It was a fun night and a great way to cap off the term. I also got to see Dr. Anderson's beautiful house organ; I knew you would want to see it so I carefully documented it. I had never heard of a house organ before coming to Perkins, and now I know two or three people who have one. It's all the rage, really.


Now, two exams and one cold later, I am done for the term! First term of my Master's degree is all wrapped up - I'm ready for a nap. ;)

Lessons and Carols


A big Advent tradition at Perkins is the Lessons and Carols service put on jointly by the Seminary Singers (Dr. Hawn at the helm) and Meadows Chorale (led by Dr. Elrod, my conducting professor). We've been preparing most of the term for this big service which is done twice, in the afternoon and evening. It's a tradition of the Seminary Singers to have a dinner together in between services, with a white-elephant gift exchange. It was a beautiful service filled with eclectic music. We sang a very cool arrangement of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", a little bit "blue Christmas", with added soprano sax. We also did a beautiful setting of one of John Thornburg's texts, "Look Up at the Stars" - not even published yet. In fact - the copies we were singing from had DO NOT COPY splashed across the front in huge grey letters. Apparently we actually did have permission to sing from the photocopies, but... we started calling the piece "The Big Do Not Copy" whenever it was time to turn to it.

We also did Hope for Resolution, which David and I remember from BCC days. It blends "Of the Father's Love Begotten" with a Xosa melody. We had to do one of those "clicks" in the language... that caused much hilarity during practice as we were rather terrible at it. People would either drop it completely, or sort of half get it but it wouldn't sound like much... one time I heard someone come in with it about half a bar after the fact... ha ha. We were pretty good at it by the end, though! Dr. Hawn had it all worked out that the soprano sax would come back in with the hymn tune as we sang the African... then we'd come to a hummed major chord at the end... and the soprano sax would throw in the first two phrases of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" over it, in the minor mode... oooOOoohh....
The Meadows Chorale also sounded beautiful, and did a variety of pieces as well. My favourite though (no bias) was Eleanor Daley's piece "The World's Desire"... ooh and there was also a gorgeous setting of "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming." The Seminary Singers were up at the front this year, and the Meadows Chorale were in the balcony at the back. This was a big deal; apparently this was the Seminary Singers' first turn up front. People were joking about not being able to wear their comfy shoes this time.

Of course, this was all happening amid the very end of term, when we were all going crazy with papers, tests and performances. Here's Nick looking a little done in by the term.

The dinner in between was delicious, and we had a hilarious time with the gift exchange. I hadn't done one of these before; you're supposed to pick a piece of miscellaneous clutter from your home and giftwrap it. Then you take turns picking, and laughing at the tackiness or bizarreness of each re-gifted item. Of course, someone inevitably throws in some chocolates or a bottle of wine. So, the next person gets to decide if they want to take a new gift, or steal someone else's already opened gift. I actually got a very nice book out of it; have a look at what David got (it plays music and "dances"). Ulston scored the bottle of wine.


It's so fun having David singing in the choir. People were allowed to bring spouses to the dinner and there were various "hangers on" present - but David's part of the club!

Yanksgiving

Toward the end of the Fall Term here we get a very welcome break in the form of American Thanksgiving! David enjoyed a really, really quiet dorm and a hiatus from campus construction as we stayed on campus over this long weekend. Thanksgiving here is celebrated on Thursday, and different amounts of the surrounding week are holidays - I hear some schools get the week off; we got Thursday and Friday.

Ken and Mary-Jane Cooper at First Pres very kindly invited us over for Thanksgiving dinner. This was our first opportunity to see their house, and we got to hang out with some "strays" from the choir whom Ken and Mary-Jane adopt at Thanksgiving. We also got to meet their cat... uh... gee, I can't remember their cat's name. I guess all cats' names pale in comparison to my organ professor Larry Palmer's cat's name, "Wailf (waif) Vaughan Williams."

We had a very delicious turkey dinner with all the Thanksgiving extras, including apple AND cherry pie (complete with lattice top). The Coopers have a warm home and Mary-Jane loves pottery, so we got to eat and drink from some lovely hand-crafted pottery from their various travels. We shared cultural stories, i.e. Northern vs. Southern United States, and U.S. vs. Canada (not to mention the equally comparable Texas vs. the rest of the U.S.) I told them about Due South and we compared accents from various places. Ken and Mary Jane have a cute white table cloth that they have people sign at the end of the meal with a marker, and then someone needlepoints the signatures onto the cloth. There were signatures in two different colours of thread from previous years. I signed my name and drew a Canadian flag - David berated my drawing skills (par for the course).



In this picture we are standing in front of a clock that was given to the Coopers by a member of the church. This woman was important in the community and left an endowment when she passed away. Half of that endowment goes to help the Stewpot mission (the meal kitchen run seven days a week by the church); the other half helps the music program, including my intern stipend. It was nice to learn about her since David and I are benefiting from her legacy.


A couple of days later, our friend John Thornburg took us out to explore White Rock Lake, which is a public park and lake not far from SMU campus. It used to be the main hydro source for the city, but of course now the city is much too large for that and several artifical lakes have been built. John also drove us through some residential neighbourhoods, including past a small church where he used to serve. That area is one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods and used to be suburban Dallas; the homes look very '50s, a little like the Beaches. It was a nice spot to see, contrasting with the megahomes of Highland Park and University Park right around our campus; but, you could see one or two "blockbusters" on each street marking the changing real estate tastes.

I haven't been blogging much lately - it's been quite an end of term! I can officially say I am done now though, and can catch up a bit. My marks are coming in and I'm passing! ;)


P.S., I just remembered the cat's name: Cheech. He's a rescue cat; I don't think we know where Chong is.

"If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee": A World-Travelled Hymn by Catherine Winkworth

Our big research project for Church Music Colloquium this term was to research a hymn text and write an article about it. The article was to be the kind of thing you would find as introductory material to a text in a hymn companion; providing background information on the text and author and information about where and how it is used. I really enjoyed doing this project and was able to dive into journals, other hymn companions, and various online resources. It's a great thing to know how to do as a musician, because every hymn and piece of music has a story, and it's really enriching to begin to uncover that story before performing it.

Dr. Hawn really liked my paper. :) We all have to edit our papers down and then we'll get them published in a United Methodist magazine (I think like The Presbyterian Record for the UMC).


So for those who are interested, here is my paper on "If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee," translated by Catherine Winkworth (of "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," "How Brightly Shines the Morning Star," and "Now Thank We All Our God" fame).


In their 1998 article for Music Reference Services Quarterly, William E. Studwell and Dorothy Jones lament the relative obscurity of translators, noting by way of illustration that the benchmark Library of Congress system neglects making them a catalogue access point.[1] However, Studwell and Jones uphold Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) as an important exception. Scholar and hymn writer Erik Routley posits that what John Mason Neale (1818-1866) and company were to the translation of Latin and Greek hymns in the mid-nineteenth century, so near its end Catherine Winkworth was to the promulgation of German hymnody in English.[2] At a time when increasing interest in the scholarship and theology of continental Europe meant the Protestant church in Britain was taking a particular interest in the Pietism of Germany, Winkworth sought to explore the hymn texts of "the real birthplace of congregational hymnody."[3] Today, to say Winkworth's translations are well-known in English-speaking European and North American congregations would be an understatement, and through her craft they stand alone as texts in their own right. However, her original intent was not the publication and dissemination of the hymns; she undertook the translation of nearly 400 texts by some 170 authors as a personal devotional exercise, the manipulation of the language (of which she was expertly skilled) being an end in itself.[4] She published her first volume, Lyra Germanica, in 1855, and in 1858 followed it with Lyra Germanica: Second Series: The Christian Life. Both of these contained verse translations without music. The latter contains a single text by poet Georg Neumark, "If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee".

Neumark (1621-1681) wrote his original text ("Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten") in 1641 and published it in Jena in 1657 in his Fortgepflantzter musikalisch-poetischer Lustwald, in seven verses of six lines to an original tune in g-minor (usually identified as Wer nur den lieben Gott). The tune is in a dance-like triple meter and is in bar form. The occasion of its composition was his appointment as tutor in the household of judge Stephan Henning at Kiel,[5] a point of much relief for him after a period of misfortune and instability. His text – which he referred to as a Trostlied or song of consolation[6] – admonishes Christians to truly put their faith in God. Based on parts of Psalm 55 as well as the Epistle for the fifth Sunday after Trinity (1 Peter 3:8-15), which contains instructions to honour life and seek peace, it is especially poignant in light of its being written during the violence of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). The haunting melody has been used in various contexts: J. S. Bach's Cantata BWV 93 employs the full text, and the final chorale of his Trauungskantate BWV 197 modifies Neumark's final verse in order suit the sacrament of marriage.[7] The hymn is also featured in the 1987 Academy Award-winning film Babettes Gœstebud (Babette’s Feast) with text in Danish, and thus has traveled, to quote hymnologist Lawrence L. Lohr, "from Jena in Germany to Oscar night in Hollywood."[8]

Winkworth's translation first appeared in her earlier Lyra Germanica, in what is now a less familiar version that opens with "Leave God to order all thy ways." In praise of this work, Jane Stuart Smith and Betty Carlson note that Winkworth "had a special gift for serving the spirit of the great German hymns while translating them."[9] Routley points out that in translating, Winkworth often ignored the German meters.[10] Indeed, Winkworth herself is quoted as saying that "a hymn that sounds popular and homelike in its own language must sound so in ours if it is to be really available for devotional purposes, and it seems to me allowable for this object to make such alterations in the meter as lie in the different nature of the language."[11] Later, encouraged by musicians and convinced it would meet a need, Winkworth in 1863 published the famous Chorale-Book for England containing around 200 of her translations set to music. In this book appears her more familiar treatment of Neumark's text, readjusted to fit the meter of his tune. In style her translations reflect the Pietistic tenor of the time and her Evangelical Lutheran upbringing, and are sincere, devotional and direct. Hymnologist John Julian states in his Dictionary of Hymnology that "they have had more to do with the modern revival of the English use of German hymns than the versions of any other writer."[12] When it has been included in English-language hymnals, "If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee" has usually been cut down to three or four stanzas – most often stanzas 1, 2, 3 (or 6), and 7. More recently, Neumark’s tune was set to a text in the Book of Praise (Presbyterian Church in Canada, 1997) by American hymn writer Pat Michaels which explores the many faces of healing (“Sometimes a Healing Word is Comfort”). While the original text stresses trust in God and waiting for God to bring comfort in God’s own time, Michael’s text explores the human aspect of caring, peace and justice. This fresh new text stands in contrast to the notably Victorian syntax of Winkworth’s treatment. Opinions are divided on how best to content with the now somewhat dated language of Winkworth’s translations; some hymnals include her text largely in its original form but with andro-centric language for God altered (as in The United Methodist Hymnal of 1989).


Though she struggled throughout her life with frailness due to continual illness, Catherine Winkworth's output was prolific and she enjoyed a measure of renown in her own time. She was also, in the words of religious scholar Martin E. Marty, "a pioneer in women's higher education, a founder of Clifton High School, and she prepared the ground for the establishment of the University College at Bristol."[13] In his preface to Paul Westermeyer's book With Tongues of Fire: Profiles in 20th-Century Hymn Writing, Marty recalls seeing at a church picnic a one-act play with an all-female cast – admittedly, he notes, of questionable quality – in which Winkworth was the heroine.[14] He characterizes Winkworth as a sort of "proto-feminist"[15]; one who was a proponent of young women making the journey into the city to obtain an education, and who was possessed of "a hunger for learning and self-expression."[16]

The web-based Dictionary of North American Hymnology (www.dnah.org), a project of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, identifies 104 hymnals in which Winkworth's "If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee" has appeared between 1867 (its first North American publication, in The Book of Worship by Clark and Maynard in New York) and 1976.[17] Though Lohr notes that Neumark’s text is less commonly used than some of Winkworth's other translations (notably "Now Thank We All Our God" and "Oh Morning Star, how Fair and Bright") it has been a cherished hymn for German-speaking congregations over the centuries,[18] and is an excellent and satisfying text which still resonates today. As noted sacred music scholar Robin A. Leaver expressed in his book on Catherine Winkworth, she "faithfully transplanted Germany's best hymns and made them bloom with fresh beauty in their new gardens."[18] The seed Winkworth planted blooms anew each time "If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee" is sung for personal devotion or congregational praise.

"Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plains..."

This weekend my Youth Choir went on a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma. We were hosted by the youth group of College Hill Presbyterian Church, which is on the edge of the campus of the University of Tulsa. A young man named Ben Buchanan, who is a member of First Pres, is now a student at UT and attends College Hill Pres. So, that's the connection. We had 14 choir members attend the trip; they are a nice bunch of young people. We camped out on the floor in the youth area and had a great time.




The drive up was a little dramatic; we left in the middle of Friday afternoon traffic in Dallas, the parent chaperone who was driving had never driven to Tulsa, didn't bring a map, and we almost ran out of gas on the freeway when we couldn't find a gas station. Oh, and we got lost on the highways of Oklahoma City for about 45 minutes around 11:30pm. That was fun. But, we made it eventually!





On Saturday morning I had a rehearsal with the young people. I am working on getting them to sit up and support their sound, and we are just starting to work on the idea of following my conducting gestures musically. Oh, and don't forget watching the conductor! They sang a Latin American folk song called "Alabare", a John Bell piece called "Take This Moment", Dad's words to Arirang ("Abba, Abba, Hear Us") and "Many and Great." For that last one, we used the words out of the Canadian Book of Praise (The BoP, as I like to call it), which start out "Many and great, O God, are your works, maker of Earth and Sky." Though the text appears in the American Presbyterian hymn book, they go "Many and great, O God, are thy things..." which... really... well... yeah, no.

The Youth Choir gets a new t-shirt made every year (!) and I got David to design it this year in time for the trip. We will wear them this year when we sing in church too; though there are choir robes set aside for the youth, all my guys are too short for them! We have to wait for the growth spurts to kick in. But, David's design is sharp and the kids all think the shirts and David are "awesome."

After we got ready for singing in the service, we met up with Ben on the campus and he gave us a tour. The Dallas kids were not dressed properly for Tulsa - it was crisp, cold and windy during the day. Gorgeous weather - but not good for kids dressed in shorts and flip-flops. They pretty much froze their little Texan tushes off.




We went for lunch at Taco Bell - I would like to report that there are no french fries at Taco Bell in the southern U.S. What's that about?? In the afternoon we had showers at the YWCA (I thought of Aunt Jill) and a scavenger hunt on the university campus, organized by the youth group of the church. That was a lot of fun, and a great way to get the kids running around outside and burning energy. We had dinner with the two youth groups back at the church and watched "Get Smart." My kids were talking big about staying up late and "bonding", but they pretty much fell asleep at 11, which was fine with me!


In the morning we all got our t-shirts on and prepared to sing in the service. The regular choir at the church had the morning off so we were the main event! Ken had organized us to bring along our Orff (a.k.a. orphan) instruments to accompany Arirang and Many and Great, and that sounded really nice. My big trouble right now is that my kids can't seem to sing a whole step in the line "your hands have set the heavens with stars" (between 'set' and 'the') in Many and Great; they keep singing a semitone. I think it's because it's hard to get the modal sound in your ear if you aren't used to it, it's high for them (working on that) so they're afraid to go for it, and there's a semitone in a similar motif in the first line. Sigh - we'll get it one of these days! Enjoy this picture of me using way, way too large conducting gestures in an effort to elicit a musical response from the kids.




The service went well; the young people were really well behaved the whole time (same goes for the weekend overall) and they sang nicely. The minister and congregation at the church were really pleased and grateful that we were there and that the kids sang. And, a lady who is an Orff instruments teacher came in to see us and rave about our Orff playing (way to go, chaperones).

Our drive home was beautiful, through the reserve lands of Oklahoma. Not the gorgeous leaves in Ontario but still beautiful and a nice change of scenery. It was pretty much as smooth and great as I think a trip like that can be, and I felt like I got to get to know the kids in a more laid-back way. It feels great to be back and be in the home stretch of my first term at SMU!

Happy Birthday to Me



Here are a few belated pictures from my birthday last week! David didn't have time to organize anything on the day of, so Bailie and Andy took over and had a party for me when I woke up in the morning. The day after my birthday, a few MSMs came out to Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant (actually Italian; apparently back in the mafia days you drew less scrutiny from the cops if you were an Egyptian restaurant, and now it's become a joke that's stuck). We were all in the middle of major stress (Megan and I were grappling with Intro to Grad Studies Exam II, which is nothing less than legendary on campus) but people took time to celebrate with me. Chelsea even went out beforehand and bought a cake to bring!

Hilapoo and the blustery day

The weather in Dallas was kind enough to be windy, chilly and wet today - just the weather I'm accustomed to on my birthday!

This week is my busiest week (or at least I hope there won't be a worse one!) so while I would normally be at the church on Monday mornings, I begged off to get school work done. That meant I was able to spend my birthday morning in Starbucks with a latte, studying for my massive Intro to Grad Studies exam on Thursday (I'll give a better sense of what that's all about soon). But not before David had a little birthday party for me with balloons all over the place and some nice gifts, including a new computer game! (Nerdy, I know.) Too bad I don't have a computer to play it on... but we're working on that.

I've gotten a lot of work done so far and am now going to write a bit more of my Old Testament paper (I'm at Bridwell Library; my USB key has become my new best friend) before going to Organ class. Then it will be writing a paper for Colloquium, finishing up a project for Intro to Grad Studies, and flash cards for my exam with David. Definitely the most scholastic-tastic birthday I've had to date. But I am having a great day and many friends have left messages on my Facebook wall and sent notes and cards. I miss everyone I would normally see on my birthday (not to mention the ubiquitous birthday carousel) but I'm grateful to be where I am.

Okay, I have to go write about the vilification of Potiphar's wife in Genesis chapter 39.

"Your computerbox needs words."

...so apparently, my computer was just holding on to see if Obama would get elected. Before he even gave his acceptance speech, my hard drive fried. It started making these crazy clicking and sqeaking sounds, and then the screen went black. It's like that part in the gospels where Simeon is waiting in the temple to see the coming of the baby Jesus.

"Master, now you are dismissing your Toshiba in peace, for my eyes have seen your Obama..."

It had my study notes, notes for a term paper and two projects in progress on it. Luckily I had just handed in my Church Music Colloquium paper earlier that day. I asked Dr. Hawn not to lose it because it's now the only copy. He said "We'll talk later about backing up."

Oh well... Go Obama!

Quick Update

So, I haven't been as good about my blog recently, but really exciting and fun things are happening here. Most recently, we got to spend an evening with harpsichordist and Handel expert Susan Ferre and members of the Texas Baroque ensemble. We spent the evening learning about 18th-century performance practices and conducting excerpts from Handel's Messiah. It was like karaoke for sacred music majors. We had a great time – everybody did a wonderful job conducting singers and live musicians, and coping with singing the normally familiar music of the oratorio at lowered pitch. The fact that the music is placed just that much differently in your voice really makes a difference! I was groping for notes that I normally am pretty solid on. It was lots of fun. One MSM did particularly well conducting a recitativo accompagnato for which Dr. Hawn was supplying the tenor part – and pugnaciously over-ornamenting the line in an (unsuccessful!) attempt to throw the student conductor off. Our classes are like a concert and a comedy act rolled into one.


I got my first chance to get up in front of the Chancel Choir at First Pres this past week, starting to prepare them to sing Eleanor Daley's arrangement of the Huron Carol for Christmas Eve. They seemed to like it! I'm really looking forward to combining them and my Youth Choir for the piece. In other news, I had my youth sopranos and altos holding a major 2nd last practice – woo hoo!

I'm doing lots of assignments and writing papers and tests, and getting the same back with favourable results, which feels great! Please pray for me as I navigate the upcoming weeks, with many things coming due around the same time and a trip to Oklahoma thrown in for good measure.

I will share your joy and sorrow 'til we've seen this journey through

This weekend we celebrated Thanksgiving in the Deep South! That's right; no one knew what I was talking about when I wished them a Happy Thanksgiving, and the grocer raised his eyebrow when I asked him where the stuffing (dressing) was, but who cares! We had a tasty dinner of roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and the perennial cabbage salad. My first-ever try at making a feast like this! I think it was a success.

This year, Thanksgiving weekend coincided with our first wedding anniversary. :) :) :) We did a lot of remembering, and went back over all the gifts of friendship we were shown during our wedding time. We essentially concluded that our wedding kicked butt.

The first anniversary is the paper anniversary – don't be impressed; I googled that one. Apparently David had googled it too, because he made me an anniversary card out of leftover paper from our wedding invitations. I made apple pastries for breakfast. I had a whole clever joke worked out about how it's the paper anniversary but I got it wrong and thought it was the pastry anniversary.... but then when the time came I forgot to actually make the joke. Maybe that's for the better.

We both agreed we're glad to be on this adventure together, and are looking forward to year 2!
